The Museum of Aguas de Alicante hosted a large group of water cycle experts in search of solutions to the major water challenges that the region will face in the coming years. The “CoP Alicante H2Orizonte 2050” was organized by Cetaqua (Water Technology Center) and Aguas de Alicante, framed within the European research project B-WaterSmart. Participants came from the regional Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, the Environment Service of the City Council of Alicante, the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation, the Valencian Business Confederation Alicante, and the Las Atalayas Industrial Estate, among others.
Discussed were effects of the climate change, opportunities, and solutions to water challenges and B-WaterSmart smart technologies, and circular economy solutions. Divided into different working groups, the participants faced the challenges posed by this “Community of Practice” (CoP), through dynamic work and debate on the main water problems affecting the region in the near future. The morning session aimed at detecting opportunities as well as proposing solutions to address these environmental challenges.
Coordinated by Cetaqua, the Living Lab of Alicante is one of the six Living Labs of the B-WaterSmart project (Belgium, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, and Spain). It is the first innovation space in Spain for water reuse and the identification of circular economy opportunities in the region. Therefore, Aguas de Alicante is testing a wide range of innovative technologies to improve the sustainability of its Rincón de León wastewater treatment plant and is also a link between stakeholders in the field of reclaimed water.
