Valorization of oil and fats and food waste to improve co-digestion performance (D2.2)

Deliverable 2.2 is a technical report on the work carried out in Task 2.1 within the Alicante Living Lab, more specifically in subtask 2.1.1 that had the objective of developing, customizing and demonstrating a pilot scale validation of the valorisation of oil & fats from wastewater and food waste from other industries, aiming at improving co-digestion performance and producing biogas from sewage sludge. The present report gives a brief introduction to the current operation of the on-site digesters at Rincón de León WWTP. It then characterizes the co-substrates used for the piloting campaign. The piloting campaign is explained, and the pilot plant is presented, as well as the retrofitting work completed. The results of the campaign are shown and discussed, as well as the potential environmental and economical benefits of the full-scale implementation of the co-digestion of the residues in the WWTP Anaerobic Digestion process.
