D2.3 Micro-turbines for energy recovery in WWTP

Deliverable 2.3 is a technical report on the work carried out in Task 2.1 within the Alicante Living
Lab, more specifically in subtask 2.1.2 that had the objective of developing, customizing and
demonstrating a pilot scale microturbine for energy recovery from WWTP effluents.
A pico turbine was installed at the outflow of the Monte Orgegia WWTP in Alicante as a
demonstrator for energy recuperation at any kind of business processing large amounts of water.
The demonstrator showed that regardless of the size of the turbine, a roughly similar level of
efficiency can be delivered. Nevertheless, if a water-treatment site has been setup with
energy-efficiency in mind, the energy-recuperation capability could be low. The business case for
pico turbines is more in the direction of businesses with low-power needs, close to rivers or
irrigation channels.
